Where’d I Put That Metrocard?

I’m sure this has happened to you at least once — you are running for the subway and realize you can’t find your metrocard.  It’s happened to all of us.  Or you realize that you don’t have enough money left on the card for a ride and the train goes whizzing by you.  Yep — it’s unfortunate and avoidable.

Metrocard Overload

This very thing happened when I was with my friend Danielle recently — she was searching and searching for a card with $2.25 for a one-way trip on the NYC subway.  She found 7 cards total — none of them had enough on them.  We missed our train. I always keep my metrocard in the exact same place so I don’t lose it.  But not Danielle…sigh.

Although her tendency would be to just buy another ticket so we could be on our way (which got us in this predicament in the first place) — Danielle decided to consolidate.  At the ticket window the teller swiped all 7 cards for a grand total of $24.49!! Enough for about 10 rides!  Wow!

Be Prepared and Save Time

The moral of the story here is that if you just take a few minutes to do a little housekeeping and keep things in order — you can save time, money, and headaches. Keeping commonly used objects in the same place all the time will help you be more efficient.  You will run late for fewer meetings, you will miss fewer dates and you won’t feel like a scatterbrain! I promise!

This doesn’t just apply to metrocards but just about anything.  Have you bought toothpaste and then realized you already have a stash in your cabinet?  Yep — making a list would prevent this.  Some times I make a list of the things that I’ve already bought — so I know not to buy them again until I need them.

Another quick tip: Get a hook or dish for your keys and put it near the door so you always know where to find them.  Just taking a few extra minutes to prepare can do wonders and get you out the door quicker.
