Founder of “Bootights” Relies on To-Do Lists
I love clever stuff. Those things that make you go “why didn’t I think of that?” That’s how I feel about Bootights! You know how you have to wear socks inside your boots even when you’re wearing tights? Just so you don’t destroy the tights or your feet don’t freeze? Well Bootights are tights that are especially designed to wear with boots! Yep — brilliant, right?
The founder Shelby Mason is a list maker just like us! So naturally, she’s my featured list producer:
Q: Why do you call yourself a compulsive list producer?
A: I can’t function without lists. As a business owner, I wear many hats and have so many different areas that require my attention – from development to logisitics to PR and Sales. I need to keep my priorities in all areas in order so I walk around with a tablet everywhere I go to keep me on track. I love the way it feels when I check off each item. I feel lost without my daily To Do list.
Q: What do you make lists about?
A: What I want to accomplish each day. Calls to make. Future strategies, trade shows, deadlines. You name it.
Q: How often do you make lists?
A: Daily.
Q: What type of list do you make the most?
A: To do lists and call lists. Future goals and development deadlines.
Q: How do you make lists?
A: Mostly hand written. I use Post-its, tablets and big paper lists that I tape to my wall with longer term goals. I also use my Outlook calendar to keep my appointments straight and me on task for important deadlines. Another version of a list, I suppose.
Q: How have you found lists help you succeed?
A: Absolutely! I wouldn’t be able to reach my goals if they weren’t written down. It keeps everything in perspective and me organized. Lists help me plan and stay organized in all aspects of my life – from daily tasks to long term strategy and goals.
Q: Specifically what was the last thing you wrote a list about?
A: This morning I wrote a list of marketing and press contacts to reach out to. I also wrote a list of items to discuss with my mill on development for a meeting we will have on Monday. The lists never end but I need them. I should probably make a list to keep my lists straight!
Inspiration comes in many forms. For founder Shelby Mason (who was a road warrior as VP of Syndication Sales for Disney/ABC Domestic television) it came while on a business trip traveling through Chicago’s O’Hare airport. While making her way through security, Shelby took off her stylish boots to expose the ugly parit of white “man socks” she had layered over her tights for extra warmth and comfort. Disgraced but determined, Shelby spent the entire flight wondering, “why a gal can’t have a cute, quality tight combined with a comfy sock to wear with her boots?” By the time the plane landed the idea for Bootights was taking off.
