Write a Letter To Your Future Self About COVID-19

Before I decided to start my own business as an author, speaker, and media trainer, I worked as a senior health producer for television news. Even though I loved my job, the time came when I realized I wanted to move on. 

The day I realized I needed a change, I wrote myself a long email about how I was feeling. I used an app called Boomerang for Gmail to schedule the email to arrive in my inbox one year later.

I knew that if I didn’t document how I was feeling in that moment, I would be able to trick myself into forgetting that it was time for me to start something new. 

It’s true – there was a Stanford University study done that found your brain filters out the information it doesn’t think you’ll need later. So your brain has a hard time holding onto all the information and emotions you have.

But some of the things you forget actually ARE relevant and important. I wrote about this in my book Listful Living.

That’s why writing yourself a letter right now, during this unusual time, can help you remember the lessons you’re learning.

This doesn’t have to be a perfect letter. Just write about what you’re feeling, no matter what those emotions are.

When that email I wrote to myself came one year later, I was in the process of leaving my job to start my business. I was scared, but reading that letter from myself was a reminder that I’d known for a long time that this was what I needed to do. 

Right now, you’re probably having realizations about what’s really important in your life. But when the routines of regular life start up again, you might forget. 

So let’s all try this together. And in one year, we can check in with each other about what our letters say and how we’re going to use our insights to lead happier, more productive lives

Being More Productive While You Sleep

Wouldn’t it be great to make money while you sleep? 

It’s a worthwhile goal, but it can take years to achieve. 

In the meantime, you can at least send emails while you sleep. I do it all the time, using a gmail extension called Boomerang.

Boomerang allows you to write an email and schedule it for a later date. Followup.cc also has similar features and reminders so you don’t get lost in your inbox. And now Gmail even has the option.  Read more

Productivity Tips I Learned from Seth Godin

I caught a recent interview with Seth Godin on Marie Forleo TV and I was inspired to share it with you. Seth isn’t in the productivity biz per se, but he’s one of the most prolific writers and business developers out there. He’s written 18 bestselling books, built and sold businesses and has some of the best advice. Here are some of the top tips from his talk with Marie:

Be geared to ship

I’m a perfectionist – I can’t help it! I don’t like to put out anything that I’m not 100% happy with. I’m getting better but it’s still an issue.

The problem with that, as Seth points out, is that the focus is on making it perfect instead of just getting it out there. Seth writes a blog entry every single day, they won’t all be great, but everyday he’s putting his thoughts and ideas out there.

When you do that you can’t worry about making it perfect, you just have to go for it. Being a perfectionist can go hand in hand with overthinking or overstretching an idea. If there’s something you want to do, stop worrying about it and just get started! Read more

Make Technology Work For You

mail-566337_640You may have seen my recent emails about email overwhelm and my course Take Back Your Inbox. I’m determined to help everyone reach inbox zero! Our email overwhelm is really just a symptom of our much bigger problem… technology.

There are so many apps out there designed to make your more productive, you could waste a whole week downloading all of them. Too much technology can be counterproductive. So how can you target the right apps for you? How do you figure out which emails count and which ones can go? You can use websites such as my digital mate to research and read more about the latest apps and phone developments to help make a more informed decision about what to download and what to pass on. I’ve also heard of some people deciding to better understand their smartphone technology by buying components from websites similar to Octopart.com and building electrical circuits in order to gain new skills and improve productivity because of a newfound understanding of how this amazing technology works. But I digress.

Tonight I’m doing a teleseminar with ADHD expert and author Terry Matlen where I will be discussing some easy ways to use technology to be more productive. We will talk through a significant number of apps and how to use them throughout your day for maximum efficiency.
