6 Fun Ways to Take a Break and Avoid ‘Summeritis’

I’ve been trying to fight it but I have “summeritis.” The official definition (that I’ve made up) is when “you’re more focused on your vacation, the weather, summer cocktails you want to make or just about anything summer related rather than your work.” This decreased interest in work and increased slacking, happens to everyone from time to time. It’s great to have this while visiting somewhere like Craig Manor country house hotel in Bowness on Windermere.

While it’s healthy to daydream – there’s work to be done people! I try to take a few breaks during the day to recharge. Taking a walk to get a cup of tea or talk to a coworker is all you need sometimes. Pressing the pause button for a few minutes can give your mind time to rest and prevent burn out or frustration. Then, when you do get back to work, you’ll be more focused and productive.

Fill Your To-Do List With Fun

430213_10152769872390193_743900261_nThe “real” to-do list in this photo inspired me and I wanted to share it with you.  Check it out — it lists things that you should really have on your to-do list — like:

  • Sing
  • Smile at strangers
  • Eat ice cream
  • Laugh

I’m all for a list that looks like this one!  It’s much more fun than one goes on and on about responsibilities and tasks. But both are equally important.  So how about for every task related to-do you add to your list — you also add a fun one?  I’m going to try it today.

Get Some Time Back and Still Get Things Done

Time…it’s what everyone complains about and what we wish we had more of. But maybe you’re not using your time wisely enough. This quote makes me chuckle,

“If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”

Ha – I’ll tell you who said it in a minute.

TaskRabbit.com is a service that will help you get everything on your to-do list done. I wrote a guest blog for their NYC launch and met with a few of their staffers while they were in town. I have used TaskRabbit to get two projects completed that had been giving me a headache. Read more

The “Hit Time” Method for Getting More Done

In TV news we use the term “hit time” a lot.  It means the time that your story will be “hitting the air.”  We will say “what time is your hit?” or “this hits in 10 minutes,” or “are you going to make your hit?” Using strict deadlines in the news business works — the newscast will carry on with or without you.  So you better be prepared and make your hit time.  I’ve carried over the idea of hit times into my daily life.

Using the “Hit Time” Method

When I get dressed in the morning I have several “hit times” where I know if I’m not doing a certain thing at that time — I will be late.  For instance — if I’m not out of the shower by 7:15am — I won’t be able to do my hair, makeup, eat breakfast, read the newspaper and check my email.  I like doing all those things (and yoga) before I leave in the morning.  I know by this “hit time” what I have time to do and what I can’t do so I can still make it to work at a reasonable time.  Read more
