Is it just me? Or does it seem like everyone has a different schedule these days? Some people are fully remote. Some people are full in-office. And some people are hybrid.
So how do we work effectively when we’re all working at different times?
I spoke with remote work expert, consultant, speaker and educator, Michael Gutman on my show Inside Scoop all about remote work strategy and what business leaders need to consider when implementing their strategy.
Here are just a few nuggets of wisdom he shared and you can get them all when you watch the full episode here.
1. Strategy is something we measure.
Michael pointed out that strategy is something we plan for, to something we react to. And that’s a great foundation to start with. We’ve been living in a reactive mode and haven’t taken time to sit down and really think six months into the future – and a year or five beyond that. So, start with a strategy.
2. Focus on results first.
Expecting an entire workforce to perform optimally from 9am–5pm isn’t a realistic expectation. Michael noted that some people might work through problems during a run, and others might be reenergized by a 20-minute power nap during the 2pm slump. Many companies focus on how many hours employees are in front of their computer, not on what results a team is producing. So take a look at the output of the team first.

3. We’re productive at different times of the day.
Okay, I’m not a morning person. My productive energy burst is after lunch and I schedule my day accordingly. Michael is a morning person and works with a contractor who prefers to work late at night when it’s quiet. Some people need to drop off or pick up kids at school, or take the dog for a walk midday. Michael encourages companies to take a look at their policies and rethink their strategy around office hours. Knowing your own personal productivity style is something that I dive into deeper in my book Listful Living: A List-Making Journey to a Less-Stressed You. It’s important to know yourself and plan your day around when you’ll be most productive.
Michael shared so much more about remote office strategies and you can watch our entire conversation here.
