How many times have you had a project, like a big project where it has a million to-dos and all of these different things that you have to make sure to get done and you’re like, how am I going to do any of this?
What if you are planning a trip, not just one trip, but 50 trips a trip in every single state?
That is a lot of coordination.
That’s a lot of lists.
I spoke with author, speaker and life coach and one of my media-training clients, Shari Leid on my show Inside Scoop all about how she’s organizing and making lists to plan travel to all 50 states.
Though Shari and her family have traveled all over the world, she has yet to visit all 50 states. So she decided to change that. This year, Shari is traveling to each state to visit and talk with a woman as a way of learning more about them, their families and communities.
I met up with Shari in Florida and we chatted and ate oysters.
1) Logistics
It’s important to be organized when managing a project as big as Shari’s 50 States Project and Shari has two lists — one in alphabetical order by state and the other is by order of travel date. She uses these to map out which states she can visit in one trip to make it easier to book flights, hotels, and transportation.
2) Communication
Using lists can also help track communication. Shari has lists to track communication with her virtual assistant and each of the 50 women she’ll meet this year. In fact, that was one of the most important things she looked for in her guests — the ability to communicate clearly. By using lists to track communication, Shari has made it easy to see which guests she’s checked in with months to weeks out from their meeting. Next time you travel you may want to use a list to track communication with your Airbnb host.

3) Packing
When taking long or short trips I love a good packing list and Shari has automated the process. Shari uses an app called Stylebook. It stores photos of your clothes and you can build outfits and add them to calendar days. That way, when packing, you can make sure you don’t forget a shirt you need or shoes for a specific outfit. It’s pretty genius.
Shari shared so much more about her 50 States Project and you can watch our entire conversation here.
