I recently spoke with Karen Rizzo, author of “Things to Bring, S#!t to Do.” As far as we’re aware we are not related, but since Karen’s first book is a memoir told entirely in lists, we might well be! List making might be in our blood because like me, Karen inherited her list-making tendencies from her father.

Our Lists Reveal Our Personalities 

Our lists are usually very personal.  The lists I write probably say a lot about who I am.  Karen explained to me that this was the idea behind her book. She had been asked to write some words of wisdom for a new mother, and as she sat with the blank paper in front of her, all she could think of were things she needed to do. Lots of successful people also happen to be list makers — like Sir Richard Branson!  He’s a high-profile British billionaire and founder of Virgin Group, which is made up of more than 400 companies including Virgin Atlantic.   What you may not know is that he’s also dyslexic and struggled when he was in school. In fact, his principal told him he would either end up in prison or become a millionaire.  When I saw on his blog that he was a list maker. I just had to share some of his productivity tips with you.

Tonight I will be attending the inaugural New York Women in Communications‘ WiCi awards. This awards ceremony honors pioneering women who are changing the field of communications. The incredible women being honored are pushing the communications industry forward and are inspiring the leaders of tomorrow. I’m excited to attend.

 

This got me thinking about women who inspire me. Having mentors and women to look up to has been one of the biggest positive forces to propel me forward in my life and in my career. Here’s a list of the women who inspire me (in no particular order!):

Making Your To-Do List “Stick”

With a limited number of hours in the day, there is only so much that can be accomplished. I’m someone who hates to go to bed with a task left unfinished, but sometimes with a big empty Sunday ahead of me I can get a little ambitious. I’ve found though that if you set yourself up for small wins by limiting your to-do list you’ll feel more accomplished at the end of the day. It’s much easier to get 3 things done than 30. It’s just simple math – and I’m terrible at math but trust me, it’s true!

This method can be used to increase productivity at work, plan social events, and even limit overspending at the grocery store!
