One of the great pleasures of my job is working with Chris Kilham, Medicine Hunter. Chris is an alternative medicine expert who travels all over the world and has changed the way I think about medicine. In the three years that we’ve been working together on video segments I’ve also become friends with his fabulously savvy wife Zoe Helene. Like Chris she loves the outdoors and has a real respect for our environment. I thought she’d be the perfect person to help us find gifts that will give back this year. Some people are always looking for the best gift options for them at this time of year, even listening to Jay’s gift recommender to spark some ideas on the best gift for them. And with so many people clammering for a last minute gift delivery, why not do a little something for Mother Nature this holiday season while checking off your shopping list too?

Gifts That Give Back

by Zoe Helene

When Paula suggested I come up with a list of Gifts That Give Back, I knew the challenge would be to keep that list short. After collecting pages and pages of great stuff, I decided to keep this one focused on high quality traditional Christmas gifts that are also earth-friendly.

In the natural products industry we call that category ‘premium sustainable’. You might have heard it called ‘Luxury Eco,’ which is basically the thing. In a nutshell, these are high-end products that have produced in ways that are healthy for all parties along the chain of trade; and not just people, but planet, plants and critters too. Now that’s what I call true Christmas spirit. Read more

Spice Up Your Wedding Shoes

Jay and I have two weddings to attend next month. I’m reminded of the stresses that a bride will go through to make her wedding “different.” Men have it so easy when it comes to preparing for the wedding-all they need to do is find someone like a Bespoke Tailor that will help them look nice and sharp and then they’re basically ready to go. For us women, it’s much harder to come up with creative ideas to put into our wedding. There are so many ways to put your personal spin on your wedding day — your dress, the venue, the invitations, your shoes!

My good friend Arianny Rodriguez, is the owner of Bridal Shoe Style and thinks that your shoes are a great way to make your big day unique. So she’s given us a checklist with some ideas.

Wedding Shoes Your Guests Will Never Forget

by Arianny Rodriguez

We’ve heard it before – people saying “I have 5 weddings in the next 6 months!” They are more annoyed than excited for each of the couples entering a new and happy stage in their life. Wedding after wedding, they all start looking the same.

If you are a bride and want to stand out, why not do it with your shoes? They are hidden under your dress but it doesn’t mean they don’t get noticed. As soon as the formal ceremony is over, your dancing feet will pop out from under that mountain of satin or tulle and the guests will surely take notice. Make a memorable moment out of it with these simple ideas for shoes: Read more

Checklist For Being A Good Friend

Some of my favorite people – fictional and non-fictional – are best friends.

  • Oprah and Gayle
  • Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia
  • Lucy and Ethel
  • Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
  • Laverne and Shirley
  • Pooh and Piglet

Some of them are best friends because clever writers fabricated their lives that way but some are the real things. The bond that all of these famous friends have in common is the love they share for their best friends. When we get busy and other things get in our way – it’s easy to become a less-than-fabulous friend. But never fear – I have a checklist on how to be a good friend always. Read more

Checklist for the Gym

I’ll be the first to admit — I’m not a gym person. I’m not really a workout person unless typing counts. But I do like to walk and I really love yoga when I can get to a class. I wish I was better about fitting it into my schedule and making yoga a habit.  I’m adding that to my self-improvement to-do list.

But if you are a gym person it’s important to know what to bring with you! Melissa Paris is a trainer in New York City and she compiled this list so you’ll always be prepared for your workout.

Checklist for the Gym

by Melissa Paris

Like you I am always on the go! My day is never the same and my outfits may vary depending on if I am working out OR if I am training a client. I live out of my gym bag and have lists for lists for lists! I am a personal trainer, fitness competitor, blogger, you name it…I think I may do it.

There are 5 things that I never leave home without:

1. Extra Socks: Have you ever worked out and either forgot your socks and had to go barefoot in your sneakers OR had to wear the same socks you left in your bag from the previous workout? I don’t know what is worse! I always pack an extra pair of socks so I can have a great workout without sliding around in my shoes and my bag doesn’t smell! Read more

Must-Have Pregnancy Clothing List

It must be pregnancy season or something — I know a whole bunch of ladies having babies lately! A friend of mine found out when she visited somewhere similar to this Southeast Portland Pregnancy Resource Center for a check-up. And let me just say that pregnancy and fashion should go hand in hand. But they don’t always. You know what I’m talking about! Some women use this time as an excuse to “let it all hang out.” Well, my friends – it is not. You should take pride in your look at every point in your life. I know that this can be hard, as sometimes things happen that you have no control over so you don’t always want to wear your best. For example, some women who are pregnant struggle with things like an urinary incontinence, but luckily there are loads of places that you could go to help you with your problem if needs be.

Maternity clothes can be expensive but there are tricks for stretching your existing wardrobe and cost-effective ways to add to it. Marisa Moss, founder of MineForNine.com, gave me these secrets to share with all of you.

Save yourself a lot of time and stress by “editing” your closet ASAP in your first trimester.

1. Neatly fold and store all the pants without any stretch

2. Put all the dresses you already have to “suck-in” to wear in the back of the closet

3. Hide all your tailored tops Read more
